French New-car Sales Rise 10% Percent On Extra Selling Day

PARIS -- French new-car sales rose 9.7 percent in August, boosted by an extra selling day.

Registrations rose to 92,052 cars in the seasonally slow holiday month from 83,715 a year earlier, the CCFA industry body said in a statement today.

Excluding the effects of an additional sales day, the year-on-year gain would have been a more modest 4.7 percent, it said

All major brands increased sales in August except Toyota, whose volume dropped 13.5 percent, and Ford, whose sales fell 2.1 percent.

Hyundai's brand sales rose 47 percent, while Fiat's volume was up 22 percent, helped by the launch of an updated version of the 500 minicar.

Sales of BMW brand cars jumped 29 percent last month, outpacing rivals Audi, which sold 19 percent more vehicles than the year before and Mercedes-Benz brand, whose sales volume rose 8 percent.

VW-brand sales rose 13 percent in August, while Nissan sales rose 18 percent. Opel registrations were up 4.3 percent.

Domestic brand Peugeot sold 14 percent more vehicles, while sales of sister brand Citroen rose 18 percent. Volume at rival Renault brand increased 11 percent helping to offset a 16 percent drop at the group’s no-frills Dacia brand.

Eight-month total market sales are up 5.9 percent to 1.26 million.
